Hi Shauna! I’m trying to plan a trip to Italy this July, and I saw your itinerary for Puglia. We found super discounted fares to Bari and Naples, and I have always dreamed of exploring Puglia’s olive groves and wheat fields. I’m local food obsessed and involved in the organic movement, but we’re tacking this trip on to a family reunion in Ireland. Thus, I wanted to pick a spot on the Adriatic Coast where we could post up for a few days with another couple and explore the beaches, aperitivos and seafood of the coastal region. I keep seeing Polignano come up and really enjoyed your review of the area. I thought we could do two full days there soaking up the sun and sand, and then maybe rent a car or vespa to explore the interior area for some farm tours. Do you think that’s doable? We’d fly into Bari and take the train down to Polignano a Mare, and then pick up a car there after a few days? It’s always nice to get insight from someone who has been there, so thanks in advance for any insight you have!
Hi Jamie. I think it sounds like an excellent plan! The train system is pretty easy to use, but it’s highly recommended to hire a car to explore the countryside. I’d rented a car through Hertz in Lecce and returned it to Monopoli and had no issues. If you’re flying into Bari, may want to rent a car directly from the Bari airport for the entire trip or train to Monopoli and pick up a car from there. Enjoy your trip! I don’t think you can go wrong no matter where you stay in the area, though I have a soft spot for Poligano al Mare 🙂
